Uridine monophosphate (UMP) is found within many foods that we eat, from beer, milk, and even some vegetables.  The amount we typically absorb is relatively small, most of seems to get digested and excreted.  Animal research studies have revealed the potential of Uridine monophosphate supplementation in improved memory and learning (1).  In this study the researchers concluded: “The researchers concluded: “These data show that oral administration to gerbils of three compounds normally present in the circulation—UMP, DHA, and choline—can significantly improve cognitive performance.”  The animal were capable of navigating their mazes faster after supplementation.  Some interpret this to mean the rodents had better short-term, working memory and an increased ability to apply that memory in practical situations.  DHA and choline are two well-known and often consumed supplements used for cognitive performance.  This part of the research should be considered in relation to the outcome of this study.  DHA has been shown to help with prenatal and infant development and even some cognitive diseases, to learn more about Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) follow this link.

Other research suggest that Uridine monophosphate may serve as a valuable asset in the treatment of depressed adolescents suffering with bipolar disorder, but believe additional research should be conducted. (2) One of the most cited research articles discusses the potential benefit of using UMP is its potential implications of it role in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.  The research study suggests that due to the an Alzheimer’s patient’s fewer and smaller brain synapses, reduced synaptic proteins, membrane phosphatides, choline, and DHA; Uridine monophosphate may be a useful treatment option. (3)  Additional research suggests that when UMP is combined with vitamin B12 it may help with the reduction of pain associated with peripheral entrapment neuropathy. (4)
