Roberts Rules
In addition to offering insurance, professional organizations are supposed to serve as the cultural backbone of our industry. They exist to offer guidance, mentorship, education, and various resources to help you succeed.
For the most part the professional organizations in Missouri do very little in regard to fostering community and growth. We can change this. We can get involved, run for leadership positions, and cultivate the professional landscape we have always wanted.
Unfortunately navigating these organizations can be incredibly confusing, frustrating, and downright heart breaking. Few people know how to navigate parliamentary policies or have read Roberts Rules. This lack of knowledge is terribly intimidating for new volunteers. It is especially difficult when no one exists to guide you through the process or teaches you what to expect.
Sometimes our professional organizations fail to follow their own bylaws. In these instances it is incredibly challenging to foster meaningful change. What do we do when our professional organizations fail to follow their own rules? We either step away from them and forge our own path, or we organize and change them from within. No matter which direction we take having a sound understanding of parliamentary rules will be an invaluable asset to our future as massage therapists.

Your Rights Under Robert’s Rules of Order
It is easy to feel lost in your first board meeting. Many of us have never been taught how they function or have even heard about Roberts rules of order. If we want to have a voice in our industry we must possess the ability to ensure we are heard.
This is why it is essential to understand that the majority rules, but the minority must be heard. No single person has more authority than the majority. No single person has the ability to silence you. Every decision is born from a discussion.
As volunteers of our professional organizations it is our responsibility to know our rights as members to ensure we can operate in the best interests of all members. Unfortunately in our industry, just like many others, those with the knowledge often horde it. As massage therapists we are meant to be helpers, guides, and mentors. If we want to create meaningful change we must be willing to share our wisdom with others, so our professional body may collectively achieve its dreams.
